Avignon in the south east of France in Provence is set on the Rhone River and was once the seat of the Catholic popes in the 14th century. The legacy of this can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes situated in the city centre and surrounded by medieval stone ramparts, now given UNESCO World Heritage site status. For a small city it packs a lot in, from art and culture to museums, shopping and markets. With the Rhone river running through the city, there are plenty of leisurely walks that can be had along its banks. One must see is to take the free cable ferry to Barthelasse Island for a stroll in the countryside and to view the Saint Bénézet Bridge, that was, according to local legend, built by a local shepherd.
