The beautiful church of Lummelundas was founded in the 13th century and consists of limestone in the typical Gothic style. The construction has since been expanded and the different architectural styles are particularly recognisable inside the church which is filled with history. The ornate murals date from the 13th and 15th centuries. In the vicinity of Lummelunda are also several graves from the Stone Age and grave fields from the Iron Age and a number of Sliprannor; these archaeological finds consist of deep cuts in rocks and stone blocks. Mostly, these ornate stones are found in groups, and on Gotland they occur in a uniquely high frequency; over 3,500 of these ornate stones lie on the island, usually with a symmetrical orientation from east to west. To this day, people are arguing about when exactly the stones were made and what purpose they served. Some say the Sliprannor is a by-product of metal grinding; others believe that the stones served astronomical purposes. What is beyond doubt is that the stones are an impressive testimony of a bygone era, pointing to the centuries-long, turbulent history of the island of Gotland.
