Our holiday villas in Antigua are located on the island of Fuerteventura. It is the Canary Island’s largest island (after the island of Tenerife). With 3,000 sunshine hours a year, this island is a major European holiday destination. The island has fully developed and accessible tourist facilities. The island is definitely not overdeveloped like the other Canary Islands. The summer Trade Winds – the permanent east to west winds used by sailing ships for centuries – as well as the winter swells of the Atlantic make the island a perfect destination for year-round surfers. The north and west shores such as Carralejo and El Cotilla being the most popular locations. Big game fishermen, sailors, and scuba divers can also enjoy these waters. Whales, turtles, and dolphins are common sights. Island is also host to many beautiful sandy beaches. Naked sun bathing and swimming are the norm on almost all the island’s beaches.
Things to do in Fuerteventura
From our holiday villas in Antigua you can enjoy the many tourist attractions the island has to offer. The island has three auditoriums open hear round – The Isle of Fuerteventura Auditorium, Gran Tarajal Auditorium, and the Corralejo Auditorium. There are many concerts and festivals going on throughout the year. There’s Fuertemusica, which takes place in El Cotilllo, is a festival that aims to provide platforms for emerging local artists. Additionally, the municipality of Betancuria holds a festivals every year in honor of the Virgen de la Pena, the patron saint of the island. Finally, like the rest of the Canary Islands, Carnival is traditionally one of the biggest festivals celebrated on the island. With different themes each year, the festivities include activities like parades and galas to choose the carnival king.
You can also visit the Central Library of the Island, in the public university. The island also has several museums with a great variation of exhibition spaces. Heck out the Antigua Windmill Craft Centre, the Salt Museum, and – perhaps the most interesting – the Atalayita Archeological Interpretation Centre. The Settlement of Atalayita is located in the Valle de Pozo Negro, located on the east side of Fuerteventura. This site goes back to the times of the island’s first natives. You can visit constructions that are over six hundred years old, and discover the history of the settlement.
From your holiday villas in Antigua you can easily reach the Morro Velosa Statues, located just north of Betancuria in Fuerteventura. They are one of the highest points on the island with amazing views of the island, and provide an iconic photo opportunity.
