Popular with beach lovers and holiday makers, the Pelješac coast is the second largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and the perfect spot for a self-catering Croatia holiday. The coastline stretches about 65 kilometres long, between Ston up to the village of Lovište, with many holiday homes to be found along the way. When driving through Croatia, Southern Dalmatia can be reached from the Adriatic Coastal Road.
The better-known, and most popular areas for holiday rentals Croatia in Southern Dalmatia are Ston, Brijesta, Trpanj, Viganj and Orebic. In addition to its popularity for its rich culture and history, Pelješac is also famous for its quality wines, which come from the regions of Dingaè and Postup, as well the region’s fantastic olives. Why not sample such delicacies of Dalmatian cuisine whilst enjoying one of NOVASOL’S wide selection of Croatian holiday homes in Dalmatia.
Also widely known are both the mussels and the oysters from the Mali Ston bay. The area is one of the only places in Europe with the correct soil conditions for the cultivation of European oysters Ostrea edulis, which are enjoyed around the world. The aphrodisiac effects of oysters have been enjoyed wide and far, including by the nobility of the Republic of Ragusa in Dubrovnik. We recommend that you sample an oyster during your stay in one of our many holiday rentals in Croatia; the ripest and freshest can be found at the Oyster Festival on March 19th, St. Joseph’s day and served in Ston and Dubrovnik, Croatia. They can be enjoyed fresh, alive, on ice as a starter, as an aperitif, a cold side dish, in a seafood cocktail or perhaps with a fillet of tuna!
Ston and Mali Ston are also known for having the longest wall in Europe, which is well worth a visit during your stay in one of our many Croatia self catering properties. Also of interest is Orebic, which is full of history and located between the mountains and the sea, is a tranquil sandy beach! Here, a Maritime Museum and the old captain's houses remind you this was a popular departure point for sailors leaving Croatia in order to discover the world. Lastly, the former Franciscan monastery and the church Our Lady of Angels are also popular attractions which are widely enjoyed during a stay in one of our holiday lettings Croatia.
Pelješac is also home to Lovište, which could soon become a new gathering place for the rich and famous. Situated on a 6 hectare estate, next to the sea, the site has seen an investment of 70 million Euros and now boasts a large recreation area with marina for 120 boats, tennis courts, restaurants, bars, spa and wellness centre. In addition to this, Lovište is located in the most beautiful bay of the island, and has 40 kilometers of beach to offer. Although, the beach is accessible to all and is a must see during your self-catering Croatia holiday. To reach the beach you will need to travel past the 961 metre high Sveti Ilija Mountain in Orebic, which is a worthwhile trip in any case.
The area around Sveti Ivan and Sveti Ilija provide fantastic hiking opportunities for those looking to enjoy an active trip to Dalmatia! Alternatively, why not surf in Viganj or sample one of the area’s well maintained cycling and hiking trails. Our holiday rentals Croatia are also perfect for those looking to bring your pet, as many of our holiday homes are pet friendly.
