Pitigliano

The picturesque town of Pitigliano rises on a steeply sloping rock spur that overlooks deep gorges.  Many NOVASOL holiday homes in Tuscany in this pretty location offer wonderful views. The gorges were dug by the Lente and Meleta rivers into the volcanic plateau.

Discover the history of Pitigliano from your holiday homes in Tuscany

From your holiday home in Tuscany you will have the opportunity to learn more about Italian history and the rich history of this city, which was originally inhabited by the Etruscans. Marvel at the road and track system with sophisticated drainage systems and the tufa-driven tombs that were later used by the Romans as wine cellars and stables. Above these caves rise the yellow-red, medieval tufa houses.

The home of the Medicis

Take a tour of the city during your stay in your chosen self-catering holiday accommodation in Italy and visit the 14th-century Palazzo Orsini, which was given a richly decorated entrance by Master Sangallo in the 15th century. In the 13th century, the city was owned by the Aldobrandeschi, then in 1293 to the Orsini family and in the 17th century to the Medici. Since 1604 Pitigliano has belonged to the Duchy of Tuscany.

Churches and art

The Cathedral of Santi Petro e Paolo, like its mighty Campanile, dates back to the 13th-14th centuries. In the 18th century it received a Baroque facade. From your chosen self-catering holiday homes in Italy, which includes our range of holiday apartments in Tuscany, you can discover the works of the great painter Petro Aldi in the church, who was born near Pitigliano.

Stroll through the streets of the old town during your self-catering holiday in Italy

Below the Citadella is an impressive aqueduct with fifteen elegant 16th-century arches. Experience wonderful walks through the winding streets with their small artisan workshops and rummage for a the perfect souvenir of your holiday. The Italian history of the city is closely linked to the history of the Jewish population, who took refuge there in the 16th century. The synagogue and the Jewish quarter in the old town have been well restored. Do not forget to order a fine local white wine, Bianco di Pitigliano, that pairs perfectly with a delicious meal of Italian cuisine on the terrace of your chosen holiday home in Italy.
