Strategically and economically well situated, the owners of the settlement have changed several times since the Middle Ages. In 1555, the settlement and the land were integrated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Roccastrada, with its forests, vineyards and olive groves is well used for agriculture, but is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination. The art cities of Siena, Florence and Pisa are an hour's drive away and other attractions, such as the impressive medieval settlements Massa Marittima and San Galgano are within easy reach.
