Puerto de la Cruz on the North West coast of Tenerife is one of the most charming towns on the island. It has a long tradition as a holiday destination dating back to the 19th Century when people would come to visit the spas. Today, Puerto de la Cruz is a popular resort with lots of character with great beaches, nice restaurants and a charming old town. Due to its location on the island of Tenerife, there is less rainfall compared to the North of the island but enough to provide lush vegetation and a sub-tropical appearance. Puerto de la Cruz was originally built as a port for the town of La Orotava exporting sugar and wine across the world. The harbour is still in the town and a nice place to visit with its fishing boats and charming atmosphere. Along the side of the harbour are lots of food stalls serving superb local Canarian food, especially seafood making it a great place for a meal so you can have a break from self-catering Spain.
The Historic Old Town
The old town of Puerto de la Cruz is a good place to start your holiday in villas in Canary islands, where you can visit historical buildings such as the Casa de la Aduna which is the old customs house, the lively Plaza Charco (Puddle Plaza) and beautiful Canarian mansions. Also worth a visit is the Jardin Botanico which was established in 1788 and is an amazing botanical garden. If you are looking for something slightly different, then one of the most popular places to visit in Tenerife is the Loro Parque, which is a huge sub-tropical garden with exotic birds and wildlife such as parrots, a dolphinarium, gorillas, tigers and even penguins!
Beaches and Swimming Pools
There are also some great places nearby to relax such as at the main beach of Puerto de la Cruz, Playa Jardin which is a 1 kilometre fine black sand beach or the Lago Martianez, which is a swimming pool complex designed by the influential artist Cesar Manrique, which features 7 pools set around tropical gardens and also featured in a James Bond film!
