Rojales, south of Alicante, is a charming and well-loved holiday resort for holiday lettings and villas in Spain. Originally a traditional village in an agricultural region, today it is a fine combination of traditional and modern lifestyle. The town lies on the banks of the River Segura, and water has always meant a great deal to the area, which is illustrated by several of the attractions in the town. Situated inland near Guardamar and Orihuela, the town has a population of roughly 16,000. The region is very popular, and many villas for rent in Spain situated here are loyally inhabited by returning guests.
If you visit Rojales, you should pass by the gigantic and very impressive stone dam, Azud, which was built in the sixteenth century and is still functional today. The Gasparito Wells from the 1920s are also an interesting landmark to visit from villas in Valencia and Murcia. Initially designed to collect and store water, one of the two wells is still functioning, whilst the other is a gallery explaining their history. Come to the West Well and hear about how water sellers would come to collect this precious resource in bags to distribute to the surrounding areas.
Another popular attraction is El Rodeo – a row of 'cavern houses' built into the hillside from the nineteenth century, which are used by artists today to exhibit their works. The town is famous for the beautiful cave houses which are located in the hills to the south of the town. The lesser known attraction of these cave dwellings is the Casa de Las Conchas, which has been embellished by its owner with lovely seashells. Visiting from Spanish villas, this is a great photo opportunity on self-catering holidays, and is sure to make your friends back home jealous!
Throughout the year, Rojales enjoys an amazing climate with hot summers and mild winters, making this a great location for a golfing holiday. These are also wonderful conditions to enjoy the Natural Park of the Lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata. Nature lovers will delight at the range of rich flora and fauna here, just a short drive from Spanish villas in Rojales. Explore salt lakes, marshes, forest holidays and the colourful species that stop there. Migratory flamingos are a favourite! You can spot them whilst walking or cycling through the park.
